The Hangman's Lament

by Cactus Black

/

lyrics

More than 100 men have died from my hand
But I’m not an evil man
I ain’t never held a knife or a gun
and I ain’t never meant to hurt no one

My roots are humble, from a small town in the south
my folks worked hard to fill our mouths
and whether I was cursed or just born under a bad sign
at my very first breath the doctor pronounced me blind

But some burdens are given you, without your choice
Sometimes god turns away from the sound of your voice

School was no option, for a boy with my plight
My parents were resigned that I would never read or write
But at young age they saw I was good with my hands
and found me a trade to make a living off the land

And as our lives twist and bend at the hands of fate
and there’s little control over the paths we take

But the only work, a blind boy can get
Was tying the knots for the fishermen’s nets

Our town had a rash of killings in cold blood
And our sheriff took 5 before the judge
And when the verdict was read and justice was sought
They summoned me to tie the knots

And that fateful day my life forever changed
No longer would the fishermen call my name
but all around the county and up to the highlands
when a noose needed tying, they called upon my hands

And I aint ungrateful or ashamed for what I’ve been given
But killing folks ain’t no way to make a living
